In new research from Compare the Market, Cyprus and Greece had three second home locations in the top ten destinations. The stunning Mediterranean countries offer fantastic weather and good opportunities for second home buyers.

Paphos came second on the list of best destinations to buy a holiday home. The city is on the southwest coast of the island nation.

Compare the Market’s research analysed important location factors, including weather, affordability, number of restaurants, cost of living and crime levels.

An ideal destination for families, Paphos has stunning beaches and many archaeological sites to explore.

The mysterious Aphrodite’s Rock can be found between Paphos and Limassol and it is believed that the goddess was born there.

Legend says that the mythical goddess of love beauty rose from the waves next to the rocks.

Aphrodite’s mysterious connection to Paphos could explain why so many tourists fall in love with the hotspot.

The popular island holiday destination of Corfu in Greece also made the top ten best second home destinations.

Corfu’s impressive landscape of rugged mountains and sparkling sea waters make it an enticing holiday home prospect.

The island’s Old Town has a myriad of small streets to wander packed with boutiques and restaurants.

Larnaca in Cyprus also made the top ten best destinations for prospective holiday home buyers.

The port city is on the south coast of Cyprus with a buzzing city centre backed by a palm lined promenade.

Diving enthusiasts have many incredible underwater sites to keep them busy on a trip to Larnaca.

The MS Zenobia was a Swedish ferry that capsized and sank on her maiden voyage in 1980. Tourists can dive to see the ship.

The surprising winner of best location to buy a holiday home in Compare the Market’s research was Venice.

World famous for its breathtaking canal system, romantic gondolas and architectural sites, the Italian city is one of the world’s top tourist destinations.

However many Venetian residents feel the city has become too touristy and the local Government is in talks to introduce a daily fee to enter Venice.

Turnstile entry gates are expected to be brought in soon to monitor tourist activity while cruise ships have already been banned.

Compare the Market said: “While Venice is an amazing place to visit, you might want a holiday home somewhere with fewer tourists where you can really immerse yourself with the locals. In this case, Paphos in Cyprus may be a good choice.”

Two Middle Eastern destinations also made the top ten, as the exciting hotspots of Abu Dhabi and Dubai came in third and fourth place.

Beautiful Funchal on the Portuguese island of Madeira rounded off the top five destinations in the study.
