He said a few destinations rarely attract insurance claims.

Jonathan said: “World Nomads is always tracking the global travel ecosystem to ensure we’re covering the right risks at the right rates.

“Our rating algorithm ensures that every country is priced according to the level of risk at the time of the quote.

“Logically, that would mean the cheaper a policy, the safer a destination is but travel insurance is more nuanced than this and takes many risk factors into account, including those of the traveller themselves.”

Travel insurance will usually cost more for riskier destinations but other factors are also considered including a tourist’s personal risk.

He added: “Our insurance experts do assess the available data for traffic accidents and incidents of crime and have found Monaco has the least number of traffic accidents and Iceland has the lowest crime rate.

“In terms of countries deemed low risk based on submitted claims by UK travellers, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Malta, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia fare best.

“Ireland, Hungary and Latvia also rank well as low-risk destinations. Four of the five most popular countries by destination, Italy, Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands have claims rates of two percent or less, indicating that the Eurozone represents a general low-risk destination for UK travellers.”

Europe is generally seen as a lower risk destination for a holiday although there are several expectations.

Jonathan said that Brits should still ensure they have travel insurance, advising: “The perceived safety of a country doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have travel insurance, as the most frequent claims are classified as low severity incidents.”

He said half of claims dealt with by World Nomads relate to medical issues while another 20 percent relate to baggage.

A further 10 percent of claims refer to cancellation issues making it important to have insurance every time British tourists travel.

According to data provided by Semrush, the most searched for destination when it comes to safety is Spain.

‘Is it safe to travel to’ Egypt, Poland, Sri Lanka and Tunisia are also popular searches by UK travellers.

Jonathan said: “Being forearmed is forewarned and in addition to great travel insurance, we recommend checking out the FCDO advice for up-to-date Government advice on each destination you are travelling to.”

The FCDO advice will inform tourists of the main risks involved in travelling to destinations, covering everything from terrorism, crime and health.
