Panama was ranked the best country in the world for retirement. The Central American country is one of only three carbon negative countries.

Famed for its shipping canal, Panama also has some of the world’s most beautiful beaches and nature.

Starfish Beach is one of the country’s top attractions and many tourists visit to admire the funky fish.

One visitor wrote on Tripadvisor: “This is one of the most beautiful beaches I have visited.”

Panama might not be the first place Britons think of when it comes to retiring overseas but the country has excellent hospitals.

According to the World Economic Forum, medical provision is within easy reach of most of the country.

Panama also enjoys a warm tropical climate but is rarely impacted by hurricanes. Many retired expats opt to live in beach communities.

Other options include settling in the mountains such as in Boquete, a charming picture-postcard town.

Costa Rica took the second spot and was named one of the best places in the world for retirement.

The country offers expats a tropical climate and a more affordable way of life than in the UK.

Residents enjoy one of the world’s best healthcare systems with free access available for everyone living in Costa Rica.

Another Central American country, Mexico, rounded off the top three and was praised for its affordable lifestyle.

Many expats choose to settle near Mexico’s beach resorts and will find housing far more affordable than in the UK.

Closer to home, Portugal was also ranked in the top five best countries in the world for retirement.

Portugal has a lower cost of living than the UK and Lisbon is one of the most affordable capitals in Western Europe.

The country also has low crime rates and excellent golfing opportunities in the southern Algarve region.
